Emergency Services: Advanced, Experienced Care Always Available
No one can predict when accidents or severe illness will strike.

NorthShore always stands ready to deliver advanced emergency care. We never close. We treat all ages and stages of life, including infants and children. Led by a medical director board-certified in emergency medicine, our medical and nursing staff have experience, longevity in their jobs and advanced training.

Emergency patients have the assurance that NorthShore is equipped with advanced cardiac care--including cardiac catheterization lab and open-heart surgery, Rehabilitation Unit, St. Tammany’s only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, labor and delivery unit and specialists in medicine and surgery.

The emergency staff has a protocol for patients having an acute myocardial infarction that is enacted as soon as a patient presents with symptoms. This instantly activates diagnostic and treatment modalities for heart patients, saving valuable time. The protocol helps ensure that patients get potentially lifesaving treatment such as angioplasty as quickly as possible.

Our emergency department relies on staff nurses, rather than agency nurses, who have held their positions for years. Such team experience can translate into efficient quality care.

NorthShore works to care for emergency patients in as timely a manner as possible. We understand that waiting can be difficult and a source of anxiety. Patients are assessed upon arrival, as soon as possible, by a triage nurse that determines the order in which patients are taken back for treatment. Thereafter, the emergency physician assesses the patient as soon as possible. We strive to see patients and expedite their care in a timely manner.

When is the best time to make decisions about emergency care? When you and your family are healthy. If an emergency strikes, having a plan will ease your panic and help ensure you get appropriate care as quickly as possible. If you have to call an ambulance, you can direct paramedics to the hospital of your choice.

As you make an emergency plan, consider factors such as a hospital’s close proximity to your home, available medical services and staff experience. If you have children, make sure the hospital has pediatric specialty care. Patients with heart conditions need a facility with advanced cardiac services. Pregnant women require obstetrical specialization. If a hospital emergency department is not equipped for your medical needs, you may have to be transferred to another facility, delaying treatment.

Emergency care can save lives and health, so patients should not hesitate to come to the hospital. Timely care can be especially crucial for heart and stroke patients, as well as infants. At NorthShore, we’re always ready to help you and your family, even in the middle of the night or on Sunday afternoon.
