Join NorthShore Regional Medical Center on Saturday, Oct. 25, at John Slidell Park for an enjoyable event that helps fight a devastating disease and unites our community.
NorthShore and Tenet Healthcare Foundation once again are local sponsors of the annual Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Great Strides Walk. The Halloween-themed walk features a costume contest, fun kids activities, music and delicious food from local restaurants. Everyone, especially families, are invited to this healthful event on what promises to be a beautiful fall day.
The Great Strides walk, held at different locations across the country, is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s major fundraiser. In 2006, Great Strides raised more than $31 million nationally to help cure the genetic disease cystic fibrosis (CF).
By walking, you’ll help NorthShore fight CF, which causes the body to produce a faulty protein that clogs the lungs and opens the door to infections. In the 1950s, those with CF usually did not survive childhood. Today, the median life expectancy is in the 30s, but most persons with CF battle it their entire lives. More than 10 million Americans unknowingly carry the defective CF gene without symptoms. It takes two copies of the gene for a child to be born with CF.
Great Strides is one of many ways NorthShore supports health causes and our community. Other recent events we’ve sponsored or supported include the Red Beans and Rice Cookoff to benefit United Way, the Wild Game and Barbecue Cookoff supporting Community Christian Concern and City of Slidell Cultural Season.
Great Strides begins and ends at the Pavilion in John Slidell Park. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. Costumed walkers will take to the streets, cross over Robert Boulevard into Pinewood Country Club and return to the Pavilion for food and fun.
