NorthShore Makes ‘Great Strides’ To Fight Cystic Fibrosis

NorthShore Regional Medical Center set the pace in Slidell’s Great Strides Walk for Cystic Fibrosis on Oct. 28, contributing $4,500 to fight the devastating genetic lung disease that affects more than 30,000 American children and adults.

NorthShore, Presenting Sponsor along with our own Tenet Healthcare Foundation, also led by placing first in donations--$3,000--and in the largest number of registered walkers--80--on a corporate team. Tenet Healthcare Foundation matched donations with a $1,500 gift.

Cool temperatures and sunny skies made the Great Strides Walk even more enjoyable. A national event sponsored in different cities by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the Great Strides Walk raises millions each year for cystic fibrosis (CF) research and care programs.

CF causes the body to produce a faulty protein that leads to a thick mucus that clogs the lungs and opens the door to infections. In the 1950s, those with CF usually did not survive childhood. Today, the median life expectancy is in the mid-30s, but most persons with CF battle it their entire lives. More than 10 million Americans unknowingly carry the defective CF gene without symptoms. It takes two copies of the gene for a child to be born with CF.

Sponsoring the Great Strides Walk is one of many ways NorthShore supports the community and promotes improved health. Thanks to the many NorthShore employees who walked to fight CF and those who contributed to their efforts.
